SpaceX wins contract for spacecraft to land astronauts on moon: WaPo

NASA has awarded SpaceX a $2.9 billion contract to build a spacecraft to land astronauts on the moon. CNBC's Morgan Brennan reports the details of the contract as reported by The Washington Post. For access to live and exclusive video from CNBC subscribe to CNBC PRO: cnb.cx/2NGeIvi
Elon Musk’s SpaceX rolled out its Starlink early access program to the public six months ago, with the satellite internet service growing to more than 10,000 users in the first few months.
To get real-life first impressions of the service, CNBC spoke to more than 50 people who have been using Starlink. Those surveyed included households in Canada and 13 U.S. states: California, Colorado, Idaho, Iowa, Maine, Michigan, Minnesota, Montana, Ohio, Oregon, Washington, Wisconsin and Wyoming.
The majority of these Starlink users are in rural or remote areas, such as farmland or wilderness, with limited access to terrestrial broadband options - and a few with no access altogether.
“I expect to keep the service long term,” a user in Montana told CNBC. “The price of the beta for the service is more reasonable than any other option we have, and those are worse in performance. I will keep Starlink as long as its the only broadband option available to me.”
Starlink is the company’s capital-intensive project to build an interconnected internet network with thousands of satellites, known in the space industry as a constellation, designed to deliver high-speed internet to consumers anywhere on the planet.
SpaceX launched the “Better than Nothing Beta” program for the public in October, and the majority of users CNBC surveyed received invitations to join between November and February. The service is priced at $99 a month in the U.S. under the beta, with a $499 upfront cost for the equipment customers need to connect to the satellites - plus taxes, shipping and any accessories needed to mount the antenna.
CNBC surveyed users on total cost, the installation process, what they thought of SpaceX’s equipment, internet speed, reliability of the service, what their service alternatives were, their experience with customer service, any concerns they had, and their overall impressions. Here’s what users said.

They don`t tell us why this happened. Because SpaceX was less expensive and that the GOP had cut the money available. The other companies were away more expensive to build and one wasn`t even able to land.

I think NASA wanted to trigger the military lobbyists. They picked SpaceX so the military contractors now have to push the Congress to raise NASA's budget. They even provided an easy to sell reasoning: politicians now can show how dedicated they are to Artemis program by supporting a backup solution to make sure USA will land on the Moon. This way NASA can fund not just one but two landers, and if Congress does not raise NASA's budget, then well ... no candy for the big boys.

No one has ever gone to the moon. The moon is a great light, not a dusty rock for astro(not)’s to walk on. And God made two great lights; the greater light to rule the day, and the lesser light to rule the night: he made the stars also.”

It's true that the moon is not extremely reflective (reflecting less that 15 percentage of the light from the sun). However light from the sun is very bright. It's not a problem for a portion of that light to travel 240 thousand miles after being reflected (that's nothing compared to the 93 million miles light from the sun travels, and that light is still very bright when it gets here).

      Cornerback3141

The Moon does provide light, but it works by reflecting light from the sun (that's why the new moon is dark, and why the moon has phases, because Earth blocks light from the sun). Because of that, it is both a light and place than can be walked on.

27 Feb 2017 BBC : SpaceX to fly two tourists around Moon in 2018 - BBC News and more 2017 new articles making the 2018 fly to the moon claims 17 Oct 2020 - Elon Musk says SpaceX's 1st Starship trip to Mars could fly in 4 years ... Can a Starship reach Mars by 2024? and many more news articles making the 2024 fly to Mars claims. So according to those hype-machines we should already have been to the moon with SpaceX in2018 and in 2024 the claimed trip was Mars and not a mere Moon trip, so fail on claimed expectations.

    1. Inigo Montoya

@THE REAL ZENFORCE it is longer and requires more resources, but that’s a logistics issue that’s solved by the huge space in the rocket. What I said is it takes about the same Dv to get to Mars as it does the Moon. Also, is SpaceX not allowed to land on 2 celestial bodies in the same year?

Las Vegas loop needed two years to build less than a mile. @Inigo Montoya fake news, the journey is longer and does require more resources. Hence Musk is not going to land on Mars in 2024 but merely doing an orbital flight near the Moon in 2024 (yet he claimed Mars landings in the same period and moonlandings in 2018).

    4. Inigo Montoya
      Inigo Montoya

It takes the roughly the same Dv to get to Mars as it does to get to the moon, so on the side of the rocket, if it can get to the moon, it can get to Mars.

I think Gwynne Shotwell's fantastic leadership of Space X principally the Falcon 9 and Crew Dragon program is part of the reason that NASA is confident in gambling on Elon Musk and the Starship/Heavy Booster program. The fact that he has a medium sized full stage engine in development as well as systems designed to catch boosters, land second stages on multiple environments AND a refueling system are positive aspects that made me hope Space X got the contract. The evident disregard for astronaut safety and reusability with the Blue Origin lander; which is fantastic, if it works, as well as the Blue Origin's inability to get to orbit, despite having the production capacity (sic) and engines B4 and B3 to do so. I predicted Dianetics would get the contract and I am confident (crossing fingers) that some money will be going their way for their careful engineering and willingness to test and develop systems. In the end Space X besides ULA and Boeing is the strongest player in the field; somewhat reckless, but with the passion and talent to achieve NASA goals.

@John Theux high CG on .16 earth gravity will make the bounces on landing extremely hard to control, and increasing the risk of tipping over. Sure I suspect they will do it but it’s unnecessary risk. Also Capsule and cargo at 145 ft altitude requiring an outside elevator which is an extra mechanical/electrical system that create a new point of failure for astronauts. These 2 were the biggest concerns from the astronauts who wanted the Dynetics design that was 3 stairs from lunar surface. Blue origin design had the same issue with an 100 ft ladder (ridiculous).

@lextacy2008 dynetics lander have something called a negative mass margin That means the original design is helluva lot heavier and way more expensive than they originally proposed, meaning that they would have wasted more money and time redesigning and testing the thing had NASA chosen dynetics Compared to SpaceX who is already engaging in the process of prototyping the rocket, which is a lot more cheaper and has way more capabilities than a apartment shaped lander Because they're literally landing a building That means more cargo space, more research equipment, and more astronauts Not to mention they are doing most of this privately with their own money (the Artemis program funding is all well and good, but SpaceX managed without them) This has all been said by NASA on their official report NASA conducted the review, I didn't, you didn't, NASA did so don't go thinking you are smarter and think you know more about moon landers than literal astronauts and astrophysicist

SpaceX was rated better for management and their bid was billions cheaper and SpaceX lowered it even more to meet what NASA could offer. NASA isn’t settling with SpaceX.
